During the period from 10th to 14th century the only written Assamese literature were mostly the songs named charyapada. Madhav Kandali translated Ramayana into Assamese, named " saptakanda Ramayana "which was the first work of translation from Sanskrit into a North Indian language.

The Vaishnative movement launched by sankardeva and Madhav Deva in the 15th century influenced the life of the people of Assam in all aspects. This religious movement had a major impact on Assamese literature. The history is written under the patronage of the ahom kings also and enriched Assamese literature. So, Assam has a mixed culture due to assimilation of the Aryans and non-Aryan culture.
