The news spread that Louis XVI planned to impose further taxes.

The following are the five reasons why King Louis XVI decided to raise taxes:

• The state raised taxes, and citizens were forced to pay them in order to cover the costs of operating the courts, army, government universities, and offices.

• The King and Queen lived an opulent and royal lifestyle, and to cover their costs, they levied a variety of direct and indirect taxes on the people.

• The state's treasury becomes depleted due to numerous expenses, since the state was experiencing financial difficulties as a result of recurrent battles, therefore taxes were imposed to cover the royal treasury's expenses.

• The clergy and nobles enjoyed specific privileges, which resulted in the third estate being taxed. Only the third estate, which comprises big businessmen, courts, lawyers, peasants and craftsman, landless laborer's and servants, and so on, paid the taxes.

• In addition, peasants were required to pay tithes to the Church. It comprised a direct tax known as Taille as well as additional indirect taxes levied on consumer goods like as salt and tobacco.

The monarchical government used this method to collect taxes from the people in one form or another.

Hence b. Both assertion and reason are CORRECT and reason is the CORRECT  explanation of the assertion.
