The member of successively higher levels are not fewer in number, each food chain contains many steps like producers, herbivores i.e., primary consumers and so on. Each step of the food chain is called as a trophic level.

The number of organisms at any trophic level depends on upon the availability of food. In grassland ecosystem, the maximum number of organisms are found in lower trophic level but in the parasitic food chain and forest ecosystem, it is reverse.
