Galvanized iron does not rust because the zinc coating gets oxidized forming zinc oxide instead of the iron forming open oxide.
So, the zinc is offering sacrificial protection.

The major disadvantage of galvanized iron is that if the coating gets damaged then no protection from the oxygen and moisture can be provided.
