Reason: In elastic collision, velocity of approach is equal and opposite of velocity

of separation.

Answer:

Assertion:

momentum conservation: -

\ {P}_{i} = \ {P}_{f}

》mu + m(0) = m\ {v}_{1} + m\ {v}_{2}

》u = \ {v}_{1} + \ {v}_{2} _____(1)

coefficient of restitution: -

e = \frac { v_{seperation}}{ v_{approach}}

1= (v2 - v1) /u

v2 - v1 = u ______(2)

by adding eq. 1 and 2:

\ {v}_{2} = u

\ {v}_{1} = 0

from the above you see velocities are interchanged.

so assertion is correct!

Reason :

in elastic collision velocity of approach is equal to velocity of seperation.

they are not opposite.

they have to be in same direction for conserving the momentum.

reason is incorrect!

hope it helps!
