Both assertion and reason are correct and reason is the correct explanation for Assertion.

because if u solve by adding x and y, you get sin^2theta+cos^2theta+1= 2(sin^2theta+cos^2theta)+1= 2(1)+1=3

and as given in the reason, we have used the identity sin^2theta+cos^2theta=1 to solve the question and thus both A and R are correct and R is the correct explanation for A.
