Both (A) and (R) are true but (R) is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

REASON:-

When a beam of light parallel to principle axis strikes with surface of a concave mirror , it meet at a fixed point on a principle axis. This point is not other than focus. In focus light converge and produce heat energy. Due to this reason Concave mirror is also known as converging mirror. A best application of concave mirror is solar cooker. It capable to cook food because concave mirror concentrates and produce heat energy .

Assertion (A): Large concave mirrors are used to concentrate sunlight to produce  heat in solar furnace.

Reason (R): Concave mirror converges the light rays falling on it to a point.

Both assertion and reason are correct and reason is the correct explanation of assertion.

But why?

  • First of all, we know that concave mirrors are converging mirrors.
  • Sun is an object located at infinity. So, paraxial light rays from the sun get reflected from the large concave mirrors and converge at the focal point.
  • The convergence of such a huge amount of energy leads to increase in temperature which can be used for cooking purposes.
  • This characteristic of concave mirrors is extensively used in solar cookers and furnaces particularly in those countries which receive direct sun rays for a long period of the year.
