(a) Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true

(b) Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true but reason (R) is not the correct explanation of assertion (A).

Answer:

Mitochondria is an organelle found in large numbers in most cells. These have their own DNA which can replicate independently, produce its own ribosomes and have the ability for protein synthesis. However, with all these characteristics, mitochondria are called semi autonomous and not completely autonomous as the structure and functioning of mitochondria are controlled by the nucleus of the cell and are dependent on the availability of materials from the cytoplasm. Similarly, like mitochondria, chloroplasts also contain their own DNA and reproduce independently of the nucleus of the cell, but these depend on the nuclear genome for the majority of the protein and enzyme requirements. These are not produced but are inherited by the daughter cells during cell division.

Thus, the correct answer is option C.
