Both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of the assertion.

  • The green revolution, hugely increased the food grain production, in the northern India. This heavy agricultural production demanded constant consumption of groundwater for irrigation.
  • The states like Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, are also huge consumers of ground water due to agricultural irrigation purposes.
  • That's why, the agricultural sector is the reason behind the groundwater depletion in the above mentioned states.
