Answer:

Explanation:

A

Both Assertion and Reason are true and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion

1. Second ionisation enthalphy is the energy required to removed second electron from 1 mole of gaseous 1+ ions to give gaseous 2+ gives.

2.Second ionisation energy is greater than first ionisation energy because after removal of first electrons, the nuclear charge increases and electrons are held more tightly by the nucleus. This is makes the removal of second electrons difficult and hence requires more energy.

Both the assertion and reason are true and the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

  • The second ionization enthalpy will always be greater than the first ionization enthalpy for a given element.
  • This is because after the first electron is taken out from the atom, the number of electrons gets reduced but the number of protons in the nucleus remains the same.
  • As the number of protons gets greater than the number of electrons, the effective nuclear attraction increases making it difficult to take out the second electron.

The correct answer will be option b.
