Answer:

The southern slopes of the Himalayan region are covered in thick vegetation as compared to the northern slopes of the same hills as it receives less rainfall.

The growth of vegetation depends upon the amount of sunlight and rainfall received. The southern slopes of the Himalaya receive more rain due to the south west monsoon winds which travel west along the southern slops. The northern slopes do not receive any such rainfall. So the southern slopes are covered with thick vegetation as compared to the northern slopes.

Option 4 - Assertion and Reason both are true but Reason is not the correct explanation of Assertion is the correct answer.

Assertion - Southern slopes of the Himalayas has more dense vegetation in comparison to the Northern slopes. - True.

  • The Himalayas' southern slopes are more densely forested than the northern ones.
  • The southern slopes receiving the Southwest Monsoon winds is one factor.
  • These winds are essential for the country's vegetation to thrive, thus they play a significant part in the same process here.
  • There is a lot of rain when the Southwest Monsoon winds arrive.
  • Additionally, these slopes are substantially flatter than those in the North.
  • As a result, there is enough sunlight to nourish the flora, and the temperatures are suitable for it to grow.
  • These slopes are covered with dense coniferous forests, which are home to a variety of plants and animals.

Reason: Southern slopes lies on the windward side of the Himalayas, while the northern slope lies on the leeward side. - True.

  • But it does not exactly explain the reason for the assertion made.

Hence, the correct statement is that assertion and reason both are true but the reason given cannot explain the assertion made.
