The Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSP) played an important role in promoting 'Universalisation of Education.'
The DPSP under Article 41 provide right to work, to education and to public assistance in certain cases.
Similarly The DSPS under article 45, there is the provision of free and compulsory education for children. Article 45 was amended in 2002 and under article 21 A, right to education was made a fundamental right. The article reads "The State shall endeavor to provide, within a period of ten years from the commencement of this Constitution, for free and compulsory education for all children until they complete the age of fourteen years"
The DPSP under Article 46 focuses, promotion of educational and econimic interests if SCs, STs and other weaker sections.
