The caste system in India is the paradigmatic ethnographic example of caste. It has origins in ancient India, and was transformed by various ruling elites in medieval, early-modern, and modern India, especially the Mughal Empire and the British Raj.It is today the basis of educational and job reservations in India. It consists of two different concepts, varna and jati, which may be regarded as different levels of analysis of this system.
4 Major Caste Groups in India: According to Varna

Brahmans: Brahmans are at the top in Varna hierarchy. ...Kshatriyas: Next to Brahmans are the Kshatriyas in varna ranking. ...Vaishyas: Vaishyas rank below Kshatriyas, but fall within the ambit of ritually high Varna. ...Shudras: These belong to the lowermost class in Varna ranking.

People were not placed in castes but caste was inherited by birth. There was a hierarchy in the society based on the basic four occupations at that time. They were Brahamana, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra. One inherited the caste , one was born into.

We know that caste is a closed group. The powerful upper castes have the access to all property and all power while the lower castes are devoid are all rights. This contradiction sows the seed for the caste based politics. While the upper castes uses politics to keeps its societal hierarchy intact by grabbing the highest political seats. The lower castes uses politics to win back the their rights that they have been devoid of.
