Answer:: Notwithstanding the criticism over the strict enforcement of lockdown orders, about 10,000 policemen are on the streets of Goa to ensure 21-day long curfew imposed by the Central government on March 25, is a success.
While personnel on frontline duty are working in three shifts of eight hours each, their leaves are also postponed or cancelled except those on medical grounds.
“The policemen are performing an 8-hour-duty while the remaining 16 hours is their rest period. Although we have not been able to grant them weekly offs or leaves - except on medical or other emergency ground, our staff volunteered to give up their holidays until the situation is under control,” said Superintendent of Police Shobhit Saxena (IPS), while speaking to Herald.
The department has also roped-in the reserved forces for daily deployment, patrolling and keeping a check to prevent mass gathering as well as maintaining social distancing. The high-ranking officers too have been on their toes to make sure that citizens abide by the country-wide curfew.
In return, the department has catered to the needs of the staff such as making available essential goods, masks and hand rubs.
“We have undertaken a lot of welfare measure…We have stocked up on essential items for the staff, making it available at police canteen,” the IPS officer said adding, “We also have sufficient masks and alcohol-based hand rubs. A local distillery has made available to us the hand sanitizers under the CSR program.”
The two platoons of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), another senior officer told Herald, are also treated on par with the Goa police with all requirements being taken care of.
