Given :

Decrease in the volume of mercury = 0.001%

Bulk modulus (k) = 2.8×10¹⁰ N/m²

To Find :

The increase in pressure of the mercury

Solution :

  • Percentage of decrease in volume    = \frac{change\:in\:volume}{original\:volume}

       \frac{\Delta l}{l} = \frac{0.001}{100}

       \frac{\Delta l}{l} = -10^{-5}

  • Bulk modulus of mercury is given by the formula

        k=\frac{\Delta p}{\frac{-\Delta V}{V} }

       \Delta p=k\times \frac{-\Delta V}{V}

       \Delta p=-2.8\times 10^{10} \times (-10^{-5})

       \Delta p=2.8\times 10^{5}N/m^{2}

The required increase in the pressur pe of the mercury is 2.8×10⁵ N/m².
