ASSIGNMENT

Writing (Debate)
Topic School Uniforms - Why?/Why not?
The Speaker's Forum of your school is organising a debate on the motion: "There Should Be NO
Uniform in Schools.” Taking ideas from the following hints, together with your own ideas, prepare a
speech in about 120 words supporting/opposing the motion.
SUPPORTING THE MOTION
Formal beginning:
announcement of the topic and position
Development of arguments:
it is monotonous and boring
- majority of students wear dirty,
shabby, worn-out uniform
cheap quality, poor stitching
- doesn't reflect one's personality
unnecessary expenditure
in civil clothes, children look beautiful/smart
symbol of forced discipline
- compulsory to buy from prescribed shops/suppliers
Conclusion: sum up your ideas, support the motion
and thank the audience
OPPOSING THE MOTION
Formal beginning:
announcement of the topic and position
Development of arguments:
- children look smart in crisp shirts, well-ironed trousers
polished shoes, ties, belts and blazers with school crest
they are easy to identify (especially at public places and
in times of emergency)
- uniform is cheaper than fashionable clothes
- uniform brings about standard and equality
instil a sense of pride, responsibility, discipline and unity
many companies and offices require employees to wear
uniforms
Conclusion: sum up your ideas, reject the motion and
thank the audience
