These wastes contain harmful chemicals and toxins which make the water poisonous for aquatic animals and plants.
Pollution levels Around 302 polluted stretches on 275 rivers have been reported recently (See 'Extent of contamination',). The top five states showing maximum number of polluted stretches are Maharashtra, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and West Bengal.
