The word guru means a preceptor or teacher. In ancient times, a guru imparted both secular and spiritual to the students. He was a mentor and counsellor as well. He helped to cultivate values in the students and bring about a complete development of their personality. He was a role model who inspired them to lead ideal lives.
These days, a teacher's role is mostly confined to the classroom. His main duty is to impart secular education to the students. But there are many teachers who are role models for their students. They nurture and mentor the students.
So there is not much change in the role of a teacher except that now he is more concerned with the secular aspect of education.
