On the internet this “quote” is often ascribed to Churchill, yet there seems to be no evidence that he ever actually said any such thing.

As to the validity of the idea itself (and Churchill certainly doesn’t need to have said something for it to be a fair comment) - in order for democracy to be effective the populace really needs to be well informed about what’s happening in the world and why, what the actual effects of policy decisions will or won’t be, etc.

Unfortunately, in our age of soundbites, swipe right, short attention spans and the inexorable churning out of propaganda by the 24-hour news machine, there is an awful lot of minsinformation that people take at face value. Including made-up quotes by famous historical figures!
