At 8:40, the hour hand and the minute hand of a clock form an angle of 20 degree.

Solution:

The circle clock has 360^{\circ} and each minute makes 6^{\circ}

For 1 hour, the minute hand makes 360^{\circ} and the hour hand makes 30^{\circ}

At the time of 8:40, the minute hand is at 8 and it makes an angle,

\Rightarrow\left(40 \times 6^{\circ}\right)=240^{\circ}

At the time of 8:40, the hour hand is between 8 and 9, and then it makes an angle of

\Rightarrow(8 \times 30)+\frac{30 \times 40}{60}

\Rightarrow 240^{\circ}+\left(\frac{1200}{60}\right)

\Rightarrow 240^{\circ}+20^{\circ}

\Rightarrow 260^{\circ}

So, the angle between the "hour hand" and "minute hand" when the time is 8:40 is, the difference between the angle between the "hour and minute hand".

\Rightarrow 260^{\circ}-240^{\circ}

\Rightarrow 20^{\circ}
