At a certain pointn a strained material the direct stresses on the two planes at right angles to each other are 40N/mm2(along the horizontal direction) and 20N/mm2(along the vertical direction). They are accompanied by a shear stress of 20N/mm2. Compute the principal stresses and any one of the principal planes.

Answer:

The normal stresses on the planes of maximum shear stress are equal i.e. points D and E both have normal stress co-ordinate which is equal to the two principal stresses.
