The required equation is p = 0.6w

Given :

At a grocery store, the price of a watermelon is determined by how many pounds the watermelon weighs. The price of a watermelon that weighs 7.3 pounds is $4.38

To find :

  • Write an equation that can be used to determine the price, p, in dollars, of any watermelon based on the number of pounds, w, the watermelon weighs.

  • The process used to determine the equation.

Solution :

Step 1 of 2 :

Find the relationship

Here it is given that the price of a watermelon is determined by how many pounds the watermelon weighs.

As the watermelon weighs increases the price of a watermelon increases.

So Price of a watermelon is in direct variation with Weight of a watermelon

Step 2 of 2 :

Find the equation

Price of a watermelon is in direct variation with Weight of a watermelon

Now ,

Price of watermelon in dollars = p

Weight of a watermelon = w

∴ p ∝ w

⇒ p = kw (where k ≠ 0 is a non zero real number)

When w = 7.3 we have p = 4.38

∴ 4.38 = k × 7.3

⇒ k = 0.6

∴ p = 0.6w

Which is the required equation
