Let the filled and empty seats be 6x and 5x respectively.

ATQ,
5x = 120
x = 120/5
x = 24

Number of filled seats = 6x = 6*24 = 144
Thus, the number of filled seats is 144.

The number of filled seats is 144 in the given movie theatre.

Ratio and Proportion :

  • Two items or quantities that are in proportion are denoted using the ratio  ( x : y )
  • This denotes that if (x+y) is the total parts, "x" parts belong to the first quantity and the other "y" parts belong to the second quantity.
  • The ratio i.e. the division of the first to the second quantity is the ratio of the quantities.

                                 Ratio - x : y\\\\Qty1 = x/(x+y)\\\\Qty2 = y/(x+y)

Given we have the ratio of two measurements i.e. count of filled to empty seats in the movie theatre is 6: 5. Let us assume the constant of proportionality to be "x".

         Count of filled seats / Count Empty Seats = 6/5

         Count of filled seats = 6x

         Count of empty seats = 5x

Total seats = Count of filled seats + Count of empty seats

6x + 5x = 11x

The count of empty seats is given as 120 i.e.

120 = 5x

x = 120/5

x = 24

Thus, the count of filled seats =  6x

                                                  = 6 * 24

                                                  = 144

Hence, the number of filled seats is 144.
