Let the total no. of votes be x.
One candidate got = 40 % of x = 40/100 * x = 2x/5
Other got = x - 2x/5 = (5x-2x)/5 = 3x/5.
So, margin of defeat = 3x/5 - 2x/5 = x/5
By condition, x/5 = 298
Or, x = 298 * 5 = 1490

Thus, total no. of votes is 1490.
One candidate got = 2/5 * 1490 = 596
Other got = 3/5 * 1490 = 894
