The winning candidate got 56% of the votes.

This means that the losing candidate got 44% of the votes.

This also means that 12% is equal to 144 votes.

Now total number of votes is equal to =

144 x 100/12 = 1200 votes.

1200 votes were cast in the election

= 80% of the total votes.

Total number of votes =

1200 x 100/80 = 1500 votes.

Assuming there were only two candidates.

Winner - 56%, therefore loser 44%

Winning margin = 12% and we're told that this was 144 votes

Total votes cast = (144/12)*100 = 1200

80% of those on the list voted, so the total number on the list was

(1200/80)*100

= 1500
