Explanation:
The rise and fall of sea water due to gravitational forces of the sun and the moon are called tides. The sea waves produced by tides are called tidal waves. The rise of sea water and its movement towards the coast is called tide.
FACTORS THAT CAUSE TIDES - SHORTCUT
Tides are the periodic rise and fall of ocean waters. The gravitational pull of the moon and sun create the tides. When the gravitational pull is at its highest point, the result is high tide, which is the highest level of the tide. When the pull is at its lowest point, we see low tide, or the lowest level of the tide.
NATURE OF TIDES - SHORTCUT
Two tides and ebbs are experienced twice at every place on the earth's water surface in 24 hours.
High tides: When the sun, earth, and the moon are in the same line, their gravitational forces work together and high tides are formed.
Low tides: When the sun and the moon are at the position of right angle with reference to the earth, the gravitational forces of the sun and the moon work against each other and low tides are formed.
PERIODICITY OF TIDES - SHORTCUT
On an average, every place experiences tides twice a day. Every place should experience tide after 12 hours but this never happens. Each day tide is delayed by 26 minutes because the moon also rotates on its axis while revolving round the earth.
