have a pressure of 740 mm. What will be the pressure
of the gas if its volume (a) is doubled, (b) is halved?

Answer:-

(a) = 370mm

(b) = 1480mm

Explanation:-

Given:

AT A CONSTANT TEMPERATURE

  • pressure of gas = 740mm
  • volume of gas = 400ml

To Find:

Pressure after,

(a) volume is doubled

(b) volume is halved

Solution:-

From Boyle's law

If temp. of a given mass of a gas is constant, then

PV = constant

(a) Pressure after volume is doubled

P_1 V_1 = P_2V_2

740 \times 400 = P_2 \times 2(400)

740  = P_2 \times 2

 \bold{P_2 = 370 mm}

(b) pressure after volume is halved

740 \times 400 = P_2 \times \dfrac{1}{2}(400)

740 = P_2 \times \dfrac{1}{2}

740 \times 2 = P_2

\bold{P_2  = 1480mm}
