a)

  • Carbon forms covalent bonds with other elements
  • This is bcoz the valency of carbon is 4
  • Therfore carbon shares electrons
  • Carbon can form bonds with 4 monovalent compounds,one divalent and 1 monovalent,etc.
  • That is why carbon forms a large no. of compounds.

b)

  • Soaps react with calcium and magnesium salts in water to form scum which does not clean properly
  • However detergents do not react with these salts.
  • This is the major difference between soaps and detergents.
