Son = 18 years

Father = 31 years

Step-by-step explanation:

Given:

  • Sum of father and son age is 49 years.
  • 5 years ago father was 2 times of his son.

To Find:

  • Present ages of son and father ?

Solution: Let father's age be x and son's age be y years. Therefore,

➼ (Father + Son) age = 49 years

➼ x + y = 49

➼ x = 49 – y.....(1)

[ 5 years before their ages ]

➨ Father's age = (x – 5) years

➨ Son's age = (y – 5) years

A/q

  • 5 years ago father was 2 times of his son.

\implies{\rm } (x 5) = 2(y 5)

\implies{\rm } (49 y 5) = 2y 10

\implies{\rm } 44 y = 2y 10

\implies{\rm } 44 + 10 = 2y + y

\implies{\rm } 54 = 3y

\implies{\rm } 54/3 = y

\implies{\rm } 18 = y

So, Their present ages are

➫ Son's age is y = 18 years

➫ Father's age is (49 – y)

= (49 – 18) = 31 years

Given :

Sum of father's age and son's age = 49

5 years before father's age is 2 multiple from the son.

To Find :

Their Present Ages.

Solution :

Suppose father's age be x and son's age y.

Then,

x + y = 49 .....( i )

5 years ago :

  • Father's age = ( x–5 )

  • Son's Age = ( y–5 )

According to question :

2 ( y–5 ) = ( x–5 )

2y–10 = x–5

2yx = 5

–x + 2y = 5 .....( ii )

Add ( i ) and ( ii ) :

3y = 54

y = 18

Putting The Value Of y in ( i )

x + 18 = 49

x = 31

Hence,

  • Father's Age x = 31 years.

  • Son's Age y = 18 years.

Verification :

Father's age + Son's age = 49

31 years + 18 years = 49 years.

Verified.

Hope it helps.
