Let the father's present age be 'x',

Then, the son's present age will be 'x - 40'

According To Question, x - 20 = 5 (x - 40)      ⇒ (This is the equation.)

                                   or x - 20 = 5x - 200

                                   or 5x - x = - 20 + 200   ⇒ (Putting like terms together.)

                                   or 4x = 180

                                   or x = \frac{180}{4}

                                   or x = 45

So, the son's present age is x - 40 = 45 - 40 = 5 years.
