=> present age of his son = 12

at present, the person is 4 times older than his son
=> present age of the person = 4 × present age of his son = 4×12 = 48
=> present age of his wife = 48 - 3 = 45

Note: the words '4 times older than' may also get interpreted as present age of the person = 5× present age of his son = 5×12.
