Let the son be x

Father = 3x

STEP 1: Find their age 6 years ago:

Son = x - 6

Father = 3x - 6

STEP 2 : Form equation and solve for x:

6 years ago, father was 4 times that of the son:

3x - 6 = 4( x - 6)

3x - 6 = 4x - 24

4x - 3x = 24 - 6

x = 18

STEP 3: Find their present age:

Son = x = 18 years old

Father = 3x = 3(18) = 54 years old

STEP 4: Find their age 6 years later:

Son = x + 6 = 18 + 6 = 24 years old

Father = 3x + 6 = 54 + 6 = 60 years old

STEP 5: Find their ratio:

Father : Son = 60 : 24

Simplify:

Father : Son = 5 : 2

Answer: Their ratio will be 5 : 2
