Correct QuestioN :

At the 3000 km above the earth surface, what is the value of g? Given g on earth surface is 9.8 m/s².

Given :

Value of acceleration due to gravity on the surface of earth = 10m/s²

To Find :

Value of acceleration due to gravity at the height of 3000 km above the surface.

Solution :

❖ The acceleration due to gravity decreases both with increase in height and increase in depth. So it is maximum at the surface of the earth and zero at the centre of the earth.

Acceleration due to gravity at a height of h above the ground is given by,

  • g' = g / (1 + h/R)²

Where R is the radius of earth. (6400km)

By substituting the given values;

➙ g' = 10 / (1 + 3000/6400)²

➙ g' = 10 / (1 + 0.47)²

➙ g' = 10 / (1.47)²

➙ g' = 10/2.16

g' = 4.6 m/s²
