At the beginning of the story we clearly see (as written) as Fowler felt disappointed when he saw Ausable. He thought that Ausable would be a fit man who would be living in a detective's paradise between threats. So that he can provide him some good articles and readings of his work.
But when he saw Ausable all his excitement turned into despair. He became sad.
But as the story goes on to the end, we see that how Ausable saved his and Fowler's life by his wisdom. So, surely Fowler's mind must have changed. He understood that appearance can be sometimes disapproved and percieval.
He found that Ausable was a right person for him for his articles and stories. This shows that Fowler didn't had the same feeling towards the end of the story.
