At the center of a woody stem is what remains of the pith. Over time as more secondary xylem is produced, the pith is crushed down and is no longer visible in older stems. Perhaps you have seen a tree that has rotted out on the inside and is completely hollow, but is still alive. Knowing what you know now about vascular tissues, how is this possible?
