At the height of 8000 m, an aeroplane is moving horizontally with speed of 100 m/s. A bomb is dropped from it, so as to hit a target. At what horizontal distance from the target, should the bomb be released? (g = 10 m/s^2)

Explanation:

The initial speed of aeroplane horizontally , u = 100 m/s

The distance from the ground , h = 8000 m

Let the horizontal distance be x m

The initial speed vertically , v = 0 m/s

s = vt + 1/2 gt^2

h = 0 + 5t^2

8000 = 5t^2

t = under root 1600 sec

t = 40 sec

s = ut +1/2 at^2

x = ut + 1/2 gt^2

x = 100 x 40 + 1/2 X 10 x 40 x 40

x = 4000 + 8000

x = 12000 m

The horizontal distance is 12000 m or 12Km
