At the sea level the atmospheric pressure 101 x 10³ Pa is acting on a table top of size 1m². Under such a heavy pressure, why doesn't the table top crumble down?

Answer:

Because there is air below the table as well.

Explanation:

The pressure of air below and above the table are same. So the force exerted by the air above the table is countered by the force exerted by the air below the table.

Dear Student,

◆ Table doesn't crumble down because -

  • As you know, atmospheric pressure is exerted by gases which is distributed in all directions and not not just downwards.
  • Also, atmospheric pressure will be same above and below the table.
  • This upward pressure from below balances the downward force from above.
  • Therefore, table doesn't crumble down despite high atmospheric pressure.

Thanks dear...
