at the time of catching a cricket ball the time of catching is extended by moving the hand backwards with the balls .why?

While catching a fast moving cricket ball, a fielder in the ground gradually pulls his hand backward because by doing this, he increases the time in which the velocity of ball will become zero. Thus, the rate of change of momentum will be large and less force will be exerted by the ball on the handof the fielder.

In cricket when a fielder catches the ball, he/she takes his/her hand backwards to avoid injury as the ball travels at high speed. As the time is increased there would a huge difference between initial and final momentums i.e. there would be a huge change in momentum which reduces force and speed of the ball.
