  \frac{ {u}^{2} \sin(2 \alpha )  }{g}  = maximum

therefore, we know that the maximum value of the sine function is 1 which is obtained at 90° or π/2 radians. hence,

2 \alpha  =  \frac{\pi}{2}  \\  \alpha  = \frac{\pi}{4}  = 45 \: degrees

the stone must be thrown at an angle of 45° with the horizontal.
