Explanation:

use r=0.0821 and t should be absolute temp NTP is same as stp standard temperature pressure which is 27°c and 1 atm

Given,

Two gases - Chlorine gas and SO_{2} gas.

To Find,

The temperature when the root mean square velocity of chlorine gas will be equal to SO_{2} at STP.

Solution,

We can solve this numerical problem with the following method.

We know that the root mean square velocity or RMS velocity of any gas is,u_{RMS} = \sqrt{\frac{3RT}{M}.

We also know the

  • molar mass of SO_{2}  is 64 g/mol.
  • molar mass of chlorine gas is 71g/mol.
  • STP = 273k.

At STP root mean square velocity of SO_{2}  is u_{RMS(SO_{2} )} = \sqrt{\frac{3R.273}{64} }.

Suppose at T k temperature root mean square velocity of chlorine gas is u_{RMS(cl) }=\sqrt{\frac{3RT}{71} }.

Given that they are equal.

So,  \sqrt{\frac{3R.273}{64} }=\sqrt{\frac{3RT}{71} }.

\sqrt{\frac{273}{64} } =\sqrt{\frac{T}{71} }.

\frac{273}{64}=\frac{T}{71}.

⇒T=\frac{273.71}{64}=302.85 .

Hence, the temperature when the root mean square velocity of chlorine gas will be equal to SO_{2} STP 302.85 k.
