The r.m.s. velocity of a gas molecule is given by:

V= sqr root of 3RT/M

Let the temperature at which the velocity of hydrogen is equal to the velocity of oxygen at 47 degree be T

Therefore,

(V r.m.s.) H = ( V r.m.s.) O

Sqr root of 3RT/2 = sqr root of 3R*(273+47)/32

Squaring both sides we get

3RT/2 = 3R * 320/32

T = 20 Kelvin
