When  these accelerated electrons collide with the atoms they can breakaway  electrons from their bonds,Thus, creating additional electron/hole pairs and therefore,  additional current. Now these secondary carriers are swept into the depletion region, they too are accelerated and the process repeats itself. Making an avalanche of current.
