Cows are mature females of many large mammalian species, from bovines to seals, and from buffaloes to elephants and whales. As far as buffalo and bovine-cattle are concerned, females of either species are called cows. A female buffalo may be called a buffalo cow, cow-buffalo (or just cow if talking strictly about buffaloes). Female mature bovines are just called cows, all to add to the confusion.

Male buffalo are also called bulls, just like intact (because you can't "un-castrate" a male animal) male bovines are called bulls. Usually, like with buffalo above, the term "bull-buffalo" or "buffalo bull" is used to refer to the male intact buffalo and not the intact bovine.
