Athletes on a pole jump event fall on a cushioned surface because when their is no cushion, time taken to fall is less and hence the force exerted on the person is more. Hence he has more chances to get hurt.
Whereas on cushioned surface, time gets increased and the force gets reduced so the chances of getting hurt are less.
