Atmosphere is called protective umbrella.why?

It is called so because it reflects the UV rays of the sun and provide a shadow to earth.

It is called a protective layer as it 'protects' us from harmful Ultraviolet (UV) rays of sun.It doesn't allows the UV rays to enter the Earth's atmosphere
