The atom bomb is based on the principle of nuclear fission.

EXPLANATION:

Nuclear fission is a form of nuclear reaction where the nucleus inside an atom is split into fragments with mass and at the same time expelling a huge amount of energy.

In an atom bomb, this energy is exposed very violently and explosively causing massive damage and destruction. Most of the elements are stable in nature and uranium and plutonium are the only natural elements that can be split by bombardment through accelerators.

Uranium has two isotopes namely, U-235 and U-238 are widely used as fuels in atom bombs. Larger nuclei are made to bombard to give rise to smaller nuclei which lead to a chain reaction and expulsion of massive energy.
