They have the fewest number of protons relative to their respective period. From an electromagnetic standpoint, those atoms have the weakest magnet so their electrons won’t be as close to the nucleus as electrons from other atoms would be.

The Covalent and Van der Waals radiidecrease with increase in atomicnumber as we move from left to right in a period. The alkali metals at the extreme left of the periodic table have the largest size in a period.
