Iron

Iron Atomic Number : 26

Iron Atomic Mass : 55.85 g.mol -1

Physical Properties of Iron:

  • It rusts in damp air, but not in the dry air.
  • It dissolves readily in dilute acids.
  • At room temperature, this metal is in the form of ferrite or α-form.
  • At 910°C, it changes to γ-iron, which is much softer in nature.
  • It melts at 1536°C and boils at 2861°C.
  • Being a metal is magnetic in nature.

Uses of iron:

  • It is used to manufacture steel and also used in civil engineering like reinforced concrete, girders etc.
  • Iron is used to make alloy steels like carbon steels with additives such as nickel, chromium, vanadium, tungsten, and manganese.
  • These are used to make bridges, electricity pylons, bicycle chains, cutting tools and rifle barrels.
  • Cast iron contains 3–5% carbon. It is used for pipes, valves, and pumps.
  • Iron catalysts are used in the Haber process for producing ammonia.

Copper:

Atomic Number of Copper: 29

Atomic Mass of Copper: 63.546 g.cm-3 at 20°C

Physical Properties of Copper:

  • Copper is soft, but it is tough.
  • It is easily mixed with other metals to form alloys such as bronze and bronze.
  • Bronze is a tin and copper alloy, and brass is a zinc and copper alloy.

Uses Of Copper:

  • Copper sulfate is used widely as an agricultural poison and as an algicide in water purification.
  • It is a crucial element in the creation of bronze.
  • It is used for a whole range of goods, from cans, cooking foil and saucepans through to electricity cables, planes, and space vehicles.
  • Electrical conductivity is especially important because wire accounts for more than 50% of copper consumption worldwide.
  • Chemical vapour deposition, which is used in semiconductor manufacture, involves the deposition of thin copper films from a gas- phase precursor.
  • Copper is used largely as an alloy of gold and silver, and it is often plated with one or the other.
