An atom is the basic unit of matter. It is the smallest particle of an element not capable of independent existence. An element is made up of only one kind of atoms. Properties of an element depend upon the atoms constituting it.

'O'- oxygen atom

'H'- hydrogen atom

ATOMS are build up of subatomic particles-

1. Proton

2. Electron

3. Neutron

NUCLEUS in centre of the atom contains- protons and neutrons.

ORBITS or SHELLS are imaginary paths in which electrons revolve around the nucleus.

PROTON - has a positive charge (+1)

ELECTRON - has a negative charge (-1)

NEUTRON - has no charge
