The gases which are stable and inert towards chemical reactions are called inert gases (or) noble gases. The stability of these elements is due to completely filled valency shell and stable electronic configuration.

Hey friend!!!!
Here goes ur answer
Atoms of inert gases like neon, argon are mono atomic and other elements like golds with, oxygen, silver always exist in groups.
This is because the valency i.e the reacting power of these gases is 0.
To explain in detail the atoms which have octet configuration i.e the atoms which have 8 electrons in it's last shell are noble and steady and are quite inactive when compared to other elements.Hence they don't react with other elements and exist as mono atomic.
Helium is only the inert gas or noble gas which has only 2 electrons in its last shell. This type of electronic configuration is called as duplex configuration.
I hope u understand.
